The coffee is a classic Sidama: intensely floral and fruity. Peach, pear, heavy jasmine and citrus flower notes come out as the cup cools. The acidity is on the grapey and and orange-y side and balanced by a surprisingly thick and silky body.

Alaka is the name of one mill on the Hambela Estate in the Hambela municipality of the Uraga district in the Guji Zone of the Oromia region. That's quite a mouthful, but all that is to say, this is a quite specific lot of coffee. Changes to rules in the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange have allowed cooperatives, large estate, and even small farms to now market and sell their coffee directly to importers and roasters. In this case, Royal CA sourced a small jewel of a lot from one part of the ever-more-renowned Hambela Estate. It's easy to recognize why: this coffee is one of the cleanest, most expressive, and frankly chuggable coffees we've tasted out of Guji this past year.
